The Personal Gospel is a projection installation that aimed to chronicle the history and influence of Gospel music arising from the African American church.

It invites visitors to listen to personal stories that capture the emotional intensity of music so closely tied to spirituality and worship.

Experience Goals

How do we create an elegant interactive piece that immerses visitors in stories that capture personal, emotional, and communal experiences of gospel music? With soft, subtle lighting and music, the concept of an installation will set a majestic stage from which visitors can experience first-hand stories of the uplifting and transformative power of Gospel music.

1. Inspirational: Recognize the powerful and fortifying influence of Gospel music.

2. Multiple Perspectives: Explore the experience of Gospel music from different generations and points of view.

3. Emotional: Create an emotional moment through unique exhibit setup and personal stories.

Visual Inspiration

Inspired by the Kehinde Wiley’s Lamentation exhibition. The stained glass windows and paintings show strong visual expression, which is in line with the aesthetics of African American churches.

Moodboard

A more in-depth study of stained glass art from the aspects of pattern, portrait, music, gospel symbolism and typography, etc., used it as the main visual direction for the following design explorations.
